Understanding Contemporary Debates over "Sex" and "Gender" In-Person
Join presenter Justin Suran, educator, historian and writer, for a timely presentation that cuts through the culture war rhetoric to examine how we got here. Drawing on biology, history, feminist theory, and recent policy debates, this talk explores two intertwined questions: How many sexes are there? and Where do sex and gender part company? You'll learn about the postwar distinction between sex (biological) and gender (social/cultural) that shaped second-wave feminism, how that distinction has evolved—or dissolved—in recent decades, and why the conflation of these terms creates real challenges for public policy and civic discourse. We'll examine how language shapes—and sometimes obscures—our ability to have productive conversations about difference, dignity, and fairness. Following the presentation, attenders will be invited to comment and discuss the topic.
