Gardening with Nature In-Person

Join the Penn State Extension Master Gardeners of Cumberland County for this series. Registration is $5 per workshop online at the Penn State Extension website or walk-in and pay at the door. 

March 17 (Tues) : Backyard Fruit Trees - Daniel Weber PSE Fruit Tree Educator  

Few things bring greater satisfaction than eating fruit picked fresh from your own garden. Because Cumberland County has ideal conditions for growing tree fruit, if you have a bit of land (or a big pot!) you too can have your own small orchard. *How to Select *Headaches to avoid *Ensuring harvests for years to come. 

April 9: Growing Greener Communities: Stories and Strategies - Maryann Skubecz, Penn State Extension Master Gardener, 

Hear from local volunteers working to make our communities greener. Encouraging and guiding significant changes within area boroughs, HOA’s and environmental organizations. Gain inspiration from their stories and photos. Learn how they became involved and the strategies used for successful engagement.  

 May 14:  It All Starts with a Seed - Clyde Forbes PSE Master Gardener 

An in depth look at how to map out a plan for a successful vegetable garden from start to finish. You’ll learn some techniques like trellising, succession planting, companion planting and crop rotation. How to decide what to plant based on size, space and what you eat. Completing our journey with  soil health, amendments, and preparation choices. 

June 4:  Gardening For Bees - Tiffany Aires, CVPM Master Beekeeper, Owner, Keys To Bees 

Learn from a Master Beekeeper what it takes to make your back yard bee friendly. She will discuss some of the native bee varieties that call Cumberland County home and what you can do that will help them thrive. Find out why bees really are the key to environmental sustainability and a pollinator's paradise! 

July 9:  "Zone Pushing” Tender Plants in Central PA - Hylton Hobday 

Can you successfully grow and maintain some plants varieties not typically suited for Central PA? Hylton Hobday has done just that for the past decade. Find out how you too can have a more tropical vibe in your garden by learning what varieties can successfully survive with a little know how! 

August 13:  Prairie Pockets: Plants for People and Pollinators - Ian Gardener, Owner, Green Garden Designs

September 10: Simple Secrets to Houseplant Success, Marla Miller and David Watts PSE Master Gardeners 

Ever wonder why some houseplants flourish while others barely hang on? This presentation breaks down the essentials of light, watering, soil, and everyday care in a clear and approachable way. Discover simple methods for propagating plants, meet ten of the easiest houseplants to grow, and learn about tools that make plant care easier and more successful.  You will leave wanting to grow houseplants - fair warning, it is surprisingly addictive.
