Our World in Pictures: A Short History of Photography In-Person

Even in the digital age, we still treasure those old family photos lying around the house.  The art and craft of photography once involved bulky equipment, toxic chemicals, and arcane technical knowledge – until the 1890s, when George Eastman brought his simple, easy-to-use Kodak camera to the masses.  This program explores the full 200 years of photographic history: its early pioneers, its famous practitioners, and the iconic images that helped define the world in which we grew up.

A native of Williamsport, PA, John Maietta retired from a lifelong public relations career in 2010. For many years he operated a successful freelance business in the Harrisburg area, while simultaneously serving as a public affairs officer with the Pennsylvania National Guard. Starting in 2002, he completed numerous active-duty assignments with the U.S. Army, including long-term deployments to Bosnia, Kosovo, Germany, and Iraq. In 2014 he received a master’s degree in applied history from Shippensburg University.
