4th Monday of the month

(due to the Memorial Day holiday, we will meet Thursday, May 28 in the Community Room)

7 pm - 8 pm

Small Meeting Room

Read books that challenge your curiosity and sleuthing abilities. And this time, we take a look at some books set in or written by authors from the international community. Prepare for intriguing discussions about how the author developed the character of the detective or sleuth; plot twists that did or didn’t work; and how themes of justice, truth, deception and morality figured into the story. Ages 18+.

March – The Engine House by Rhys Dylan (Wales)

When a landslide on the windswept Pembrokeshire coast uncovers the skeletal remains of two bodies, ex-DCI Evan Warlow’s quiet retirement with his dog is shattered. Brought back to solve the case that haunts him, Warlow must unravel the dark secrets hidden beneath the picturesque scenery to expose the horror lurking beneath. Can he uncover the sinister truth lurking beneath the idyllic landscape before the death toll rises?

April –Lightseekers by Femi Kayode (Nigeria)

A respected Nigerian psychologist travels to a remote southern border town to uncover the truth about the murder of three university students. A thrilling and atmospheric mystery, this is an unforgettable portrait of the contemporary Nigerian sociopolitical landscape. The novel tackles the porousness between the first and third worlds, the enduring strength of tribalism and homeland identity, and the human need for connection in the face of isolation.

May – Bryant & May and the Burning Man: A Peculiar Crimes Unit Mystery by Christopher Fowler (Great Britain)

In the week before Guy Fawkes Night, London’s peaceful streets break out in sudden unrest. Enraged by a scandal involving a corrupt financier accused of insider trading, demonstrators are rioting outside the Findersbury Private Bank, chanting, marching, and growing violent. But when someone hurls a Molotov cocktail at the bank’s front door, killing a homeless man on its steps, Bryant, May, and the rest of the Peculiar Crimes Unit is called in. Is this an act of protest gone terribly wrong? Or a devious, premeditated murder? Suspenseful, smart, and wickedly funny.
